Weight Loss Options

The choice of a weight loss option is not always simple. If it’s a matter of shedding a few pounds to look great at a class reunion, it can usually be handled by eating less and exercising more. Weight gain, though, can become obesity and reach the stage where it’s about health, not appearance. When that happens, less food and more exercise might not work and, for some, might not even be an option. For the very obese, it is a problem requiring medical attention because it can be a life and death matter. It’s important to know that if a man’s weight has exceeded 100 pounds over his ideal or a woman’s is 80 pounds over hers, options other than strict diets and more exercise become available. Surgical options then come into play.

Surgical Options

A surgeon who specializes in weight loss, or bariatric, surgery has several options available to discuss with a potential surgical candidate. Gastric bypass is one of the most common types of weight loss surgery. Simply put, the stomach is made smaller and a bypass is created around the rest of the stomach directly to the small intestine. With a smaller stomach and a bypass around the remainder, a patient feels full faster, eats less and absorbs fewer calories. Be sure to ask the surgeon about having a gastric bypass St. Louis is home to many fine specialists who perform this procedure.
